The Typing assessment measures how quickly and accurately a candidate can type under time pressure. The test produces a score from 0 to 100, based on typing speed adjusted for errors.

What You Do

Type a text passage for a fixed duration (usually 1 minute).

What We Measure

  • Gross WPM: Total speed before errors

  • Errors: Incorrect, missing, or extra characters

  • Net WPM: Final speed after subtracting errors

  • Accuracy %: Correctness at the character level (for diagnostics only)

Formulas

Gross WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM = Gross WPM - Errors per minute
Accuracy % = (Correct characters ÷ total reference characters) × 100

Scoring

All results are converted to a normalized score between 0 and 100, based on population averages:

  • Average Net WPM = 38

  • Standard Deviation = 17
